I've got orange wool left over from my last project and thought I would make an orange that was partially peeled. It is a simple ball with a flap added to it. I decided the easiest way to create my interpretation would be to needle felt a ball made out of inexpensive core wool and then felt with colored merino and add a top/lid.
Once it was firm overall, I then needled felted more around the marked line which made it compress. The segments of the fruit are needled more to separate each. Colorful wool was added to the outside of the orange and bits of different colored oranges and yellows were added to the segments. Needle felting the segment edges created dimension.
The peel top of the orange was covered in orange merino wool with a bit of lighter orange and yellow on one side after the core wool was firmed up. The peel was then cut into a spiral with scissors.
Cute right? I'm always trying to find new ways to create felt and since these are relatively quick to make, I will add it to my inventory at the Co-Op where I am a member and see how it sells!
